Archaeologist
James D. Norris has worked in the field of archaeology in Alabama, Mississippi, Florida, Louisiana, Ohio, Indiana, and West Virginia. His experience includes fieldwork, lab work, and GIS. He has also informally taught GIS for Archaeologists at the Center for Archaeological Studies as well as Introduction to Archaeology at Kent State University, as an adjunct professor. In 2020 he, along with his colleagues at the Experimental Archaeology Laboratory, were the recipients of the Ig Nobel Prize. Archaeology and GIS have allowed him to work on many different projects and publications throughout his career, with many different specialists. Project locales have included public utilities, bridges, highways, housing developments, natural gas pipelines, wetland mitigations, urban environments, national forests, and historical properties. His interest are lithics, experimental archaeology, historic maps, and vernacular architecture.
Outside of archaeology he enjoys reading, collecting records, and making art.
