Phase II National Register of Historic Places Evaluation of six Archaeological sites in Carroll County, Indiana (SR 25, Hoosier Heartland, Highway Reconstruction Project)

Project Description:In 2008, under an indefinite delivery contract with INDOT, CRA conducted phase II National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) evaluations at six archaeological sites (12C499, 12C511, 12C513, 12C525, 12C530, and 12C550) in Carroll County, Indiana. This work was administered by INDOT on behalf of the Federal Highway Administration, and was conducted in compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act.
The large amount of prehistoric artifacts and fire-cracked rock found at these sites suggested that they may have had sufficient research potential to make them potentially eligible for the NRHP under Criterion D. The NRHP evaluations methods included geophysical survey, controlled surface collection, unit excavation, mechanical stripping, and feature documentation or excavation (when necessary) at the six archaeological sites.
The Phase II NRHP evaluations recovered Early Archaic through Late Archaic temporally diagnostic artifacts, but no intact, sub-plow zone features, midden, or artifact concentrations were identified at any of the sites. As such, all six sites were determined to not have adequate research potential for inclusion on the NRHP and no further work was recommended at them.
